Summer road trips have been an American tradition for many families since the mid-1900s. Louisiana is home to several iconic sights and a few well-kept secrets that make it the perfect state to explore beneath the summer sun. Here are some of the best summer road trips in Louisiana recommended by us here at Nissan of Lake Charles!
While it may sound familiar as a cheap restaurant, this White Castle is much more impressive. Otherwise known as Nottoway Plantation, White Castle stands as the largest remaining antebellum mention in the entire Southern United States. Visitors can even pay to stay a night in a mansion built in the late 1800s and sitting at 53,000 square feet!
Jean Lafitte National Park
Six sites make up Jean Lafitte National Park, but the best of the bunch is certainly Barataria Preserve. The 23,000-acre wetlands offer plenty of natural wonders to behold, including wildlife like frogs and birds. Keep your eyes open as you explore the marshes and forests, though. The area is also home to alligators.
Hills aren’t the first thing one thinks of when Louisiana comes up in conversation. Tunica Hills, however, is a premier destination where visitors can enjoy nature and spot some wildlife on the loose. Foxes, bobcats, and coyotes tend to roam the area, so be sure to have your eyes open and camera ready!
If your family is like so many others in the United States, then you probably have a road trip coming up soon this summer. One part of a successful road trip is having a well-packed car, so here are a few tips on how to pack your car for a road trip.
Luggage. When packing your luggage into the trunk or cargo area, make sure the heaviest items are on the bottom. You also want to avoid stacking items so high that the driver can’t see out of the back of the vehicle.
Overnight bag. If you’ll be stopping overnight along the way, consider packing an overnight bag (perhaps a single suitcase for the whole family) that includes only the essentials you’ll need for the night and the next morning—a change of clothes, medicines, toiletries, etc. That way you don’t have to bring in all of your luggage and repack the car the next day.
Activity bag. Each member of the family should have a small bag of things to occupy them during the trip—books, tablets, coloring, handheld games, etc.
Snacks. If you’ve ever been on a road trip before you know how important food is while in the car. Pack a good supply of car-friendly snacks and drinks to keep everyone happy. Place the snack container in a central spot so everyone has access to it.
Summer is here, which means it’s time for some fun. If you’re planning a road trip in the next few months, here are some tips on preparing your car for a summer road trip:
Get a tune-up. Nobody wants any mechanical issues while they’re travelling. Take your car in for some routine maintenance to make sure you won’t be hit with any surprise repairs while on vacation.
Clean your car. While you don’t need to do a full wash and wax, clean out the interior from any built-up junk. This will eliminate excess weight and make it much easier to pack the car when you’re getting ready to leave.
Be prepared for issues. Yes, you took your car in for a tune-up, but that won’t guarantee you won’t have any issues. Be sure to pack an emergency kit so you’re prepared for the unexpected. You never know when you might accidentally leave your headlights on and need a jump. In that case, something like this portable, rechargeable jump starter will be a life saver.
