Nissan Ready to Race All-Electric LEAF NISMO RC This Weekend

The Nissan LEAF NISMO RC, the first all-electric race car—not just made by Honda, but in the whole world—is set to rock the Clipsal 500 racetrack this weekend in Adelaide, South Australia. The LEAF NISMO RC, which will take part in the “Nissan Time Attack” this weekend, racing against a Nissan Altima V8 Supercar and a Nissan GT-R road car, will be driven by former V8 Supercars champion Rick Kelly. The all-electric race car, powered only by lithium-ion batteries, is specifically customized and streamlined for racing.

“The Nissan LEAF is changing the way we drive on the roads, with more than 100,000 zero-emission LEAF vehicles already sold worldwide,” said Jeff Fisher, Nissan Motorsport’s General Manager in Australia. “And the LEAF RC is NISMO’s translation of that innovation to the race track – demonstrating high levels of torque and grip – all without the direct use of fossil fuel energy.”

The LEAF NISMO RC will make a loud statement this weekend in its racing debut, despite the fact that you’ll barely here it whooshing around the track. Check out the race and then come check out the road-ready version of the LEAF, the world’s best-selling EV, here at Nissan of Lake Charles!

Rogue, Altima, and Pathfinder Named Best Family Cars

In their infinite wisdom, the editors at Kelley Blue Book (KBB) have included three Nissan models in a list of the 12 very best vehicles for families. To represent 25 percent of the best family cars on the road this year is quite a feat for Nissan, and we at Nissan of Lake Charles are pleased to offer all three award-winning models: the 2014 Rogue, the 2014 Altima, and the 2014 Pathfinder.

In determining the 12 Best Family Cars of 2014, KBB editors originally selected 21 representative models across 11 different automakers. Each of these models had received top ranks in the website’s Expert Ratings for different family-friendly vehicle aspects. These aspects included safety, comfort, driving performance, rear-seat entertainment, room for child seats, and cargo space, among others.

Once these 21 vehicles were chosen, the editors relied on real families who drove these cars to offer their feedback. Based on their stories and opinions, the editors chose the top 12 victors, and the rest is history.

“Each of these vehicles was designed to fit the needs of a wide range of customers and situations, while also being family-friendly,” explained Dan Mohnke, the vice president of Nissan Chief Marketing Manager & Marketing Operations. “From Pathfinder’s more conventional family profile to Rogue’s wealth of amenities and clever cargo solutions to Altima’s ideal fusion of sportiness and practicality, the mainstream appeal of these vehicles’ designs has been borne out in robust sales numbers and third-party accolades such as these most recent awards from KBB.com.”

Nissan LEAF Set Sales Record In Europe for 2013

2013 was a big year for the zero-emissions Nissan LEAF around the world, especially in Europe. That’s where Nissan sold LEAF number 100,000. And, the company sold 105 percent more LEAF cars there in 2013 than it did in 2012.

Nissan reported European sales of 11,120 all-electric LEAFs—a new sales record. It also increased its share of the European EV market to about 33 percent, and sold 25 percent more LEAFs than the next best-selling EV model, the Renault ZOE.

In 2013, the LEAF was the best-selling electric vehicle in the United Kingdom, Spain, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, and Finland.

And, 2014 is starting off with a bang, too. Nissan says January sales were up dramatically in Norway, the UK, and France. Year-over-year, those countries reported increases of 145 percent, 1,000 percent, and 240 percent, respectively.

And, the Nissan LEAF is having success here in the U.S. as well. In fact, in January, the LEAF nearly doubled its sales from last year.

Join with us in congratulating Nissan on its great success both in Europe and here in the U.S.

DIG-T R Proves Big Things Can Come in Small Packages

As the saying goes; big things can come in small packages… Nissan’s new DIG-T R, a
1.5-liter, 400 horsepower engine is no exception. Weighing an astonishing 88
pounds the engine can produce 280 pound-feet of torque, a power-to-weight ratio
that is suitable for a racecar – So that is just where Nissan plans to use it.

Nissan’s ZEOD RC will use the new engine in the historic 24 Hours Le Mans June
2014. Check out this Autoblog.com article for more information. The ZEOD RC is no stranger to making waves however, as it was one of the few hybrid racecars on the track. That’s right, a race car that can run at least one full lap exclusively on electric power before relying on its new and improved 3-clyinger engine. You can watch the
promo video with more details on the engine or read a Nissan press release here.

In a quote from that press release, Nissan’s Global Motorsport Director Darren
Cox, said “our engine team has done a truly remarkable job with the internal
combustion engine.” Although the fuel efficient little engines are not yet available
in consumer vehicles and nothing will likely match the thrill of driving a race
car, Nissan of Lake Charles offers a full line of similarly efficient and fun
to drive cars that you could drive off the lot today.

Nissan Delivers Versa Note in Giant Amazon Box

You may recall that last fall Amazon was selling the Nissan Versa Note. Well, sort of. When customers placed orders online, Amazon would connect them with local dealers to complete the process. This was a short-term promotion that Amazon and Nissan worked on together.

For the first 100 people who placed their orders on Amazon, they received $1,000 Amazon gift cards and one of them got an extra surprise. They would have their Versa Note delivered in the biggest Amazon box ever.

With the exception of the actual customer, Nissan was planning on making the delivery a big surprise with a video and press release. But not too surprisingly, someone took a picture of the giant Amazon box strapped to the back of a truck and posted it on Reddit.

With the internet doing what it does best, the picture quickly spread and Nissan’s surprise was spoiled, but not completely. We still don’t know who the actual recipient of the car was. Nissan is planning on releasing that information in its originally planned video later this month.

If you had the option, would you want your new Nissan car delivered in a giant Amazon box?

Nissan’s Taxi for London Surprises Current Drivers With Affordability

To those of us living on the other side of the pond, London triggers a number of defining images (we at Nissan of Lake Charles often find ourselves thinking of foggy
cobblestone streets, but we may have also read The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde one too many times).  One of the more iconic aspects of the city is its public transportation: from the London Underground and double-decker busses all the way down to police call boxes that are much more spacious on the inside.  Nissan has announced that London’s cabs will be getting a new look soon with the reveal of their Taxi for London.  These slick black cabs are based upon the automaker’s NV200 compact-van platform, which has already taken its place as the Taxi of Tomorrow in New York.

Wall Street Journal’s Marietta Cauchi took to the streets of London (where, contrary to what Morrisey asserts, there seems to be absolutely no panic).  What she did find was a number of grizzled old cabbies who, despite the competition presented by Nissan’s Taxi for London, seemed impressed with the new rival’s looks.

One driver says, “The public generally like the iconic shape of the current taxi that I’m using.  I think the drivers, long term, if they had a vehicle that was cheaper to run…that’d be a good thing for the taxi drivers.”

Another, who suspiciously and awesomely resembles Ernest Borgnine’s Cabbie from Escape from New York, says, “Well, it looks very smart from the outside.  It’s whether, of course, it’s practical on the inside and functional regarding passengers, wheelchair accessibility and, most importantly, has the driver got all the facilities in the front to make his long working day comfortable?”

The £30,000 ($45,291 USD) Taxi for London is remodeled to more closely resemble the iconic London cab shape, featuring a remodeled grille, LED lighting, and new front bumper panels; the Taxi for London also conforms to London’s licensing rules while managing to run more cleanly (and at less cost) than standard cabs.

“Having already overcome the unique technical challenges presented by the development of a new Hackney Carriage for London ahead of our launch of the vehicle in August 2012, we turned our attention to making the vehicle look the part,” Darryl Scriven, Design Excellence Manager at Nissan Design Europe said in the automaker’s official press release.  “The Mayor’s office and taxi drivers were very keen that we maintain the character of the Hackney Carriage, making it something that people in the city can be proud of.”

“The main challenges were concerned with making sure customers can easily recognise it as a taxi. Being in London, we were able to go out and talk to cabbies about what was important to them as well as look at the vehicle from a customer’s viewpoint. It’s unusual for us to be able to work on something as bespoke as this, specifically for one location in the world and we are very proud to have been asked to do so.”

Nissan Teases Information on New Sport Sedan Concept

Come Jan. 13, we’ll finally have all the details on Nissan’s new Sport Sedan Concept. Until then, we’ll have to content ourselves with the teaser image and sparse details we currently have.

Nissan hasn’t even told us which sedan the the new concept is. We do know it takes styling cues from the 2014 Rogue, the 2015 Murano (which is yet to be released), and the famous GT-R. However, our friends at Motor Authority have a pretty strong argument that leads us to believe it is Nissan’s new 2015 Maxima.

Nissan did offer this information: “The Sport Sedan Concept previews a new energetic design direction that amplifies Nissan’s legendary approach of applying sports car principles to a sedan.”

All will be revealed at the concept’s world reveal at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show where Nissan will also present the IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO concepts for their North America debuts.

A press conference will be held on Monday, Jan. 13 at 3:50 pm.

We at Nissan of Lake Charles will just have to exercise a little patience as we wait for full disclosure on Nissan’s Sport Sedan Concept. Come to think of it, maybe that should be our New Year’s resolution.

Nissan LEAF Owner Clocks 100,000 Electric Miles

Washington state driver, Steve Marsh reached 100,000 miles driven in his all-electric LEAF earlier this week. Governor Jay Islee and state Transportation Secretary Lynn Peterson were on hand to congratulate him.

Marsh attributed this milestone to his long commute to work and easy access to charging facilities provided by both the state and his workplace.

“With a daily commute of about 130 miles, I’ve saved more than $9,000 compared to my old gas-powered car since I bought my LEAF,” said Marsh. “With plenty of public charging options, as well as a charger installed at my office, my LEAF is a perfect car for my commute.”

With the LEAF’s 75-mile electric driving range, Marsh only had to recharge twice a day. He also had fewer maintenance costs with the electric vehicle since he purchased it in 2011than he would have accrued with a gasoline car.

We at Nissan of Lake Charles are excited about this milestone. If you haven’t started recording your electric miles, stop by today. Start clocking your way to 100,000 miles in a new LEAF and enjoy all the savings that come with it.

World’s Strongest Man Pulls 12 Nissan Notes

A new and somewhat unusual Guinness World Record was set last weekend in Lithuania, as five-times World Strongest Man Zydrunas Savickas pulled no less than 12 Nissan Notes behind him at the same time.

The event marked the end of the Lithuanian Car of the Year test camp. Savickas not only pulled over twenty-eight thousand pounds but also pulled in crowds from all over the country who came to see their national hero set the new record.

This was also an opportunity for the crowd to take a look at the all-new European-only Nissan Note. Like the strongman, it also sets new standards, surpassing the competition in technology, practicality, design, and value. It’s also got a new Pure Drive 1.2-liter engine that returns better torque, better fuel economy, and lower CO2 emissions.

“It is always great to set a new record. Once I got into my stride pulling the 12 Nissan Notes was fine,” said Savickas after the event. “Obviously, a big thank you to Nissan for helping me set the record and making it all possible.”

You won’t find a Nissan Note in the USA, but you can find the Nissan Versa Note at Nissan of Lake Charles. See you there!
